Accounting Intern

Location: Headquarters, Washington, DC.

Department: Finance

Supervisor: Vice President of Finance/CFO

Compensation: Unpaid. Students are encouraged to seek funding through their academic institution or outside sources.

 

BASIC SUMMARY:

Defenders of Wildlife, a national, nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to the protection of all native animals and plants in their natural communities, seeks an intern to work in its Finance Department.

The internship is an opportunity for an advanced college, graduate, or post-graduate student to work with the Finance team and other Defenders staff.  In this position, the intern will assist in the areas of Accounts Payable processing and General Ledger account reconciliations and analyses, helping ensure proper stewardship of funds used to meet the Defenders’ conservation mission

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review all staff travel and expense reports submitted for payment for proper coding, supporting documentation, and proper approvals in accordance with company policies and procedures

  • Communicate and resolve with staff any issues related to and travel and expense reports submitted for payment

  • Input all travel and expense reports into the accounting system for payment

  • Process accounts payable payments weekly (to include check payments and ACH payments)

  • Obtain appropriate signatures on checks / ACH remittance requests

  • Mail /distribute checks as appropriate

  • Update contracts database for contract related payments processed through Accounts Payable

  • Prepare month-end expense accruals

  • Prepare month-end expense account analyses

  • Perform month-end general ledger account reconciliations

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education:  Current student pursuing an undergraduate or advanced degree in finance, accounting or nonprofit management

  • Experience:  Background or interest in work with a non-profit organization preferred.

  • Other:

  • Knowledge of relational database accounting software and Excel

  • Attention to detail and accuracy

  • Well-organized with the ability to work independently under minimal supervision

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer and communicate with others while doing so.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • General office working conditions, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
