How to Be "Bear Wise" at Home

Never Feed or Approach Bears

Don’t risk your safety by getting too close!

Secure Food, Garbage and Recycling

Food/food odors attract bears, don’t leave out easily attainable food.

Remove Bird Feeders During Bear Season

Birdseed and grains are very appealing to bears, removing feeders is the best way to avoid conflict.

Never Leave Pet Food Outdoors

Feed your pets indoors if possible. Take inside your bowls and food bags.

Clean and Store Grills

Clean your grills after every use and make sure to properly dispose of grease.

Alert Your Neighbors!

Let your neighbors know about any bear sightings and how they can prepare.

Bear Safety and Livestock:

  • Place livestock pens at least 50 yards away from wooded areas.
  • Consider bringing smaller livestock animals inside at night.
  • Remove carcasses from site and dispose by rendering or deep burial.
