This Privacy Policy describes, among other things, the types of information we collect about you when you use our Services or otherwise interact with us, how we use and disclose it, and certain rights you may have.
This Privacy Policy is integrated into our Terms & Conditions of Use (“Terms & Conditions”).
By using the Services and providing us with your Information (defined below), you acknowledge and agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy and to our Cookie Policy and to the updates to these policies posted here from time to time.
This Privacy Policy does not apply to information collected by or provided in connection with an individual’s application for employment, current or former employment, or independent contractor arrangement with Defenders.
We may collect the following categories of information about you which are described in more detail below: (A) information you provide to us, (B) information we may automatically collect, (C) cookies & technologies used to collect information about you, and (D) information we may receive from third parties. To the extent that this information includes “Personal Information” or “Personal Data” as defined under the applicable law, this information is referred to collectively as “Information”. Specifically, Information includes any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person, who could be identified either directly or indirectly by reference to an identifier such as a name, an identification number, location data, an online identifier, or to one or more factors specific to the physical, physiological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural, or social identity of that natural person.
In using our Services, you may provide us with Information, including, without limitation:
- Individual identifiers such as name, username, date of birth, and demographic information you provide;
- Contact information such as mailing address, phone number, and email address;

- Information you submit or that we collect through your participation in our iBuffalo, iBeaver, or similar citizen science applications or programs, such as wildlife observations, photographs, and location information you enter when submitting information; and
- Additional Information as otherwise described to you at the point of collection or pursuant to your consent.
Our Services may automatically collect the following categories of usage and technical Information about you. This Information is used by Defenders for the operation of the Services, to maintain quality of the Services, and to provide general statistics regarding use of the Services. This Information may include:
- IP address, which is the number associated with the service through which you access the Internet, like your ISP (internet service provider);
- Date and time of your visit or use of our Services;
- Type of computer, web browsers, search engine used, operating system, or platform you use;
- Data identifying the web pages you visited prior to and after visiting our website or use of our Services;
- Geolocation data, such as device location information where you have granted the relevant website or application permission to access it;
- Your movement and activity within the website, which is aggregated with other Information; and
- Mobile device Information, including the type of device you use, operating system version, and the device identifier (or “UDID”). We may also collect email-opening, link-clicking, and advocacy-action activity associated with your interactions with us.
We and/or certain service providers operating on our behalf may collect information about your activity, or activity on devices associated with you over time, on our sites and applications, and across non-affiliated websites or online applications. We may collect this Information by using certain technologies, such as cookies, web beacons, pixels, software developer kits, third party libraries, and other similar technologies. Third-party service providers, advertisers, and/or partners may also view, edit, or set their own cookies or place web beacons.
- Cookies (or browser cookies). A cookie is a small file placed on the hard drive of your computer. You may refuse to accept browser cookies by activating the appropriate setting on your browser. However, if you select this setting, you may be unable to access certain parts of our Services. You may also manage nonessential cookies through the link at the bottom of the page, titled Privacy Preferences.
- Web Beacons. Website pages may contain small electronic files known as web beacons (also referred to as clear gifs, pixel tags, and single-pixel gifs) that permit us, for example, to count users who have visited those pages and for other related statistics (for example, recording the popularity of certain content and verifying system and server integrity). We also use these technical methods to analyze the traffic patterns, such as the frequency with which our users visit various parts of the Services. These technical methods may involve the transmission of Information either directly to us or to a third party authorized by us to collect Information on our behalf. Our Services use retargeting pixels from Google, Facebook, and other ad networks. We also use web beacons in HTML emails that we send to determine whether the recipients have opened those emails and/or clicked on links in those emails.
- Analytics and Fraud Detection. Analytics are tools we may use, such as Google Analytics, to help provide us with information about traffic to our website and use of our Services, and, depending on the features enabled and your preferences, to measure advertising performance and support advertising. We may also use reCAPTCHA, a tool which utilizes advanced risk analysis techniques to distinguish humans and bots in order to help us protect our websites from fraud, spam, and abuse. You can view Google’s Privacy Practices here: Privacy Policy – Privacy & Terms – Google. We may also use website interaction analytics, such as Microsoft Clarity, to understand how visitors navigate and interact with our Websites, including through heatmaps and session recordings.
- Mobile Application Technologies. If you access our Services through our mobile application, we may automatically collect Information about your device and your physical location.
Our use of online tracking technologies may be considered a “sale” of personal information or its use for targeted advertising, including “sharing” for cross-context behavioral, custom or lookalike advertising, as defined under applicable privacy laws. Where applicable, you may opt out of these activities by changing your cookie preferences at Privacy Preferences, at the bottom of this page, or by broadcasting an opt-out preference signal, such as the Global Privacy Control (GPC). See the rights section below for how we process GPC signals. Opting out does not prevent you from accessing the Websites, although advertisements may be less tailored to your interests.
For more information about our use of cookies and similar technologies, please see our Cookie Policy. You may manage your cookie preferences at any time through Privacy Preferences at the bottom of this page.
We may collect additional Information about you from third-party fundraising and payment platforms, websites, social media platforms and/or sources providing publicly available information (e.g., from the U.S. postal service) to help us provide services to you, help prevent fraud, and for our fundraising and advertising purposes.
We may receive donor names, mailing addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and giving history from other nonprofit organizations through donor-list exchanges and from cooperative databases. We may also receive information about your demographics that you have reported to third-party sources. We use this Information to support our fundraising and outreach activities. Demographic information may be considered sensitive personal information under applicable law.
This Privacy Policy only applies to Information collected or processed by Defenders as described in this Privacy Policy. We are not responsible for the privacy and security practices of those third-party fundraising and platforms, other websites or Social Media Platforms or the Information they may collect. You should contact such third parties directly to determine their respective privacy policies. Links to any other websites or content do not constitute or imply an endorsement or recommendation by us of the linked website, Social Media Platform, and/or content.
From time to time, we may also receive referrals with Information and will process that Information in the same way that is described in this Privacy Policy. The Information would include your name, contact information, address, phone number, email address.
We use and process your Information for things that may include, but are not limited to, the following:

- If you join our email list, we will have a record of your email address and all other information you choose to provide. We will send you news and also may contact you with action alerts to save wildlife, fundraising campaigns and other Defenders activities.
- If you make a donation to Defenders, your information will be added to our donor list and database, and you may be contacted about other Defenders activities, news, action alerts, and/or fundraising campaigns.
- If you join or opt-in to our activist network, you will receive informational updates and action alerts on wildlife and related issues. You also may be contacted about other Defenders activities, news, action alerts, and/or fundraising campaigns. Our activist network is an electronic network, and therefore we need an email address to contact you.
- When you take an action such as sending a message to your elected representatives, government officials or other targets of Defenders advocacy, we will send your message to these recipients, along with the contact information you provide on the input form, typically including your name, address, and email address. Defenders is not responsible for what these recipients may do with your information. Please note that officials receiving these emails may choose to contact you. In addition, sometimes government agencies publish submitted comments and accompanying identifying information in public records. This is often a part of the government process for receiving and recording feedback from the public. You should review the policies of the appropriate government body if you are concerned.
- We will receive any other information you choose to provide. For example, we may manage blogs or allow you to post stories or photos from time to time. By submitting content to us for public posting, you give us permission to post it in the designated area on our Websites, edit it, or remove it if we deem that the content is not appropriate or outdated. Information you include in a public submission may be accessible to others; avoid including personal details you do not want made public. Through iBeaver, we may collect wildlife observations, survey responses, and observation locations for conservation research and mapping. Observation data may be made publicly available through maps or datasets.

- To fulfill contracts we have with you;
- To manage relationships with third-party service providers, including vendors, suppliers, and parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, and business partners;

- Comply with our Terms and Conditions;
- Analytics for business purposes and business intelligence;
- Comply with any applicable laws and regulations and respond to lawful requests; and/or
- For any other purposes disclosed to you at the time we collect your Information and/or pursuant to your consent.
We may also use Information that has been de-identified and/or aggregated for purposes not otherwise listed above.
We may disclose your Information as set forth in the Privacy Policy and in the following circumstances:
- Third-Party Service Providers. We may disclose your Information to third-party service providers that perform certain functions or services on our behalf (such as to host the Services, manage databases, perform analyses, process credit card payments, provide customer service, or send communications for us), for sending email messages to activists, and for facilitating our fundraising activities and campaigns. In some instances, we may aggregate Information we collect so third parties do not have access to your identifiable Information to identify you individually.

We may disclose your Information without notice: (i) when required by law or to comply with a court order, subpoena, search warrant, or other legal process; (ii) to cooperate or undertake an internal or external investigation or audit; (iii) to comply with legal, regulatory, or administrative requirements of governmental authorities (including, without limitation, requests from the governmental agency authorities to view your Information); (iv) to protect and defend the rights, property, or safety of us, our subsidiaries and affiliates, and any of their officers, directors, employees, attorneys, agents, contractors, and partners, and the website Service users; (v) to enforce or apply our Terms and Conditions; and (vi) to verify the identity of the user of our Services.

- Donor Lists and Cooperative Databases. If you make a donation to Defenders, we may rent or exchange your name and mailing address with like-minded nonprofit organizations for their and our fundraising and outreach purposes. We may also provide donor email addresses and giving history to cooperative databases where other organizations may rent that information for their fundraising purposes. If you do not wish to have your Information shared in this manner, please contact us at memberservices@defenders.org or use the methods described in the Notice of Privacy Rights section below. Defenders will not share your credit card information with other organizations for their own marketing purposes.
- Information Shared with our Subsidiaries and Affiliates. We may disclose your Information to our subsidiaries and affiliates, including through the rental or exchange of donor lists, for their fundraising and outreach purposes, such as donation requests, action alerts, and petitions. You may request that your Information be excluded from these donor-list arrangements using the methods described above.
- De-Identified or Aggregated Data. We may share your Information in aggregated or de-identified form that cannot reasonably be used to identify you. We maintain and use de-identified data in de-identified form and do not attempt to re-identify it, except as permitted by applicable law.
- With Your Consent. We may disclose Information consistent with this Privacy Policy with your consent.
Our donor-list rentals, exchanges, and contributions to cooperative databases may constitute a “sale” of Information under applicable privacy laws. We may also disclose identifiers and Internet or network activity information to advertising networks and analytics providers to support our marketing and advertising activities and to improve and measure our advertising campaigns. Depending on how these technologies are used, these disclosures may constitute a “sale” of Information or its use for targeted advertising under applicable privacy laws.

We use and disclose this Information for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, subject to applicable legal requirements. Where required by applicable law, we obtain your consent before collecting, using, or disclosing sensitive Information.

We are not responsible for the privacy and security practices of those other websites or Social Media Platforms or the Information they may collect (which may include IP address). You should contact such third parties directly to determine their respective privacy policies. Links to any other websites or content do not constitute or imply an endorsement or recommendation by us of the linked website, Social Media Platform, and/or content.

However, no data transmitted over the Internet or stored or maintained by us or our third-party service providers can be 100% secure.
