Ungulates are mammals with hooves, or hard feet coverings made of keratin. The use of the term has broadened over time, but originally it referred to the orders Artiodactyla and Perissodactyle. Artiodactyla are even-toed ungulates like bison, giraffes, cattle, caribou or reindeer, sheep and goats. Perissodactyla are odd-toed ungulates like horses, tapirs and rhinos. Most living land ungulates are primarily herbivores, but some – like pigs and hippos – are omnivores.
