On Tuesday, Feb. 3, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) introduced the Whale CHARTS (Conservation Habitat Analysis, Research, and Technical Strategies) Act that proposes new tools to protect whales. Defenders of Wildlife released the following statement in support of the bill:

"The Whale CHARTS Act would fund important mapping improvements and detection technologies in whale habitats,” said Daniel Moss, senior government relations representative for Defenders of Wildlife. “Vessel strikes are one of the primary killers of whales, including critically endangered species. They are also dangerous for mariners, particularly in smaller boats. While speed restrictions are the only proven mechanism to reduce vessel strike risk, this bill will advance research that may ultimately make our waters safer for whales and mariners. We salute Rep. Matsui for her leadership in promoting whale conservation and mariner safety."

Enough is Enough: Senate Blocks Yet Another Attempt to Prioritize Drilling in the Arctic

The Senate today blocked an attempt to pass S. 5438, introduced by Senator Dan Sullivan (R-AK). The bill would have ratified and approved all authorizations, permits, verifications, extensions, biological opinions, incidental take statements and any other approvals or orders issued pursuant to federal law necessary for the establishment and administration of the Coastal Plain oil and gas leasing program, among other purposes.
