Defenders of Wildlife: Interior department still needs clear objectives for bison conservation

Washington (June 30, 2014) — The Department of the Interior today released a report outlining its plans to work with state, local and tribal interests to conserve and manage bison in the American West. Below is a statement by Steve Forrest, Senior Representative, Rockies and Plains for Defenders of Wildlife.

“It is great to see that the Department of the Interior has reaffirmed its commitment to conserve bison as an important wildlife species. While the report falls short of a clear plan of action, Defenders looks forward to working with the Department of the Interior to advance the broad objectives of the report, particularly its recommendation of the C.M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge as a significant bison reintroduction site; its support for a translocation program for Yellowstone bison and its commitment to Tribal bison restoration efforts. Hopefully, this report signals new momentum for Secretary Jewell on bison conservation and that she moves quickly to develop concrete action with Interior’s conservation partners.”
