The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge’s Coastal Plain is the primary denning habitat for the dwindling population of Southern Beaufort Sea polar bears. Unfortunately, the Interior Department is hastily moving forward with a plan to turn threatened polar bear’s home into an oil field. Industrial activities on the Coastal Plain could crush polar bears or cause mother polar bears to abandon their maternity dens and leave their cubs to perish, sending the species into further decline.
What’s more, as climate change continues to drive the loss of sea ice, pregnant female bears are increasingly forced ashore to birth and care for newborn cubs. The Coastal Plain is no place for fossil fuel extraction!
