Washington, D.C.

Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar today brought a repugnant bill before the House Committee on Natural Resources to prematurely remove the endangered Mexican gray wolf from protection under the Endangered Species Act.

Below is a response to the bill from Defenders of Wildlife senior Southwest representative Craig Miller, a grassroots leader of Mexican gray wolf recovery over the past three decades.

“Pushing this bill forward is Congress’ latest attempt to erode the Endangered Species Act; this time in a direct affront to the decades of work to save one of the nation’s rarest animals, the Mexican gray wolf. If Rep. Gosar’s bill is signed into law, Mexican gray wolf numbers will shrink dramatically, and it’s not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘how soon’ after.”
