Washington, D.C

The Department of Interior this week announced that two offshore wind companies, Bluepoint Wind and Golden State Wind, have abandoned their developments. According to reports, the companies received some $900 million to walk away from the projects. Aimee Delach, director of energy and biodiversity at Defenders of Wildlife, released the following statement in response:

“The Trump administration’s cancellation of the Bluepoint and Golden State offshore wind projects is a horrible deal for American taxpayers and for a livable climate. As with the two TotalEnergies cancellations last month, the administration is strong-arming companies into trading long-term, clean energy progress for short-term fossil fuel expansion, undermining a more resilient and cost-stable energy future. These four cancellations alone represent a loss of nearly $2 billion for clean energy lease payments being diverted into oil and gas projects that deepen the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels, accelerate climate change and harm wildlife and ecosystems.”
