Secretary of the Department of the Interior, Ken Salazar, has admitted that his deptartment had been very lax in the oversight of offshore drilling and has leveled his sights at Minerals Management Service.

A sorry cycle.  A sea turtle affectionately named “Thelma” was airlifted as an egg out of Mexico to avoid a 1979 blowout of Ixtoc 1 rig which spilled millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf.  Once more she is being closely monitored by scientists as her habitat is threatened by a Gulf oil catastrophe.

After bouncing back from near extinction from ingesting pesticides that resulted in too thin egg shells as well as hunted by fishermen who thought they were eating to many fish, the brown pelican once more finds itself in the crosshairs of a man-made disaster.
