Conservation community loses avid defender of America’s natural resources

WASHINGTON (January 13, 2014) – California Representative George Miller, a longtime champion of America’s environment and natural resources, announced that he will retire at the end of his current term. During his 40-year career on Capitol Hill, Rep. Miller, former chair of the House Natural Resources Committee, became known as one of the country’s most crucial advocates of conservation.

Statement by Jamie Rappaport Clark, president of Defenders of Wildlife:

“Representative Miller is the epitome of what an elected official should be. During his career in service he not only tackled healthcare, education and labor issues, but tirelessly fought on behalf of wildlife and the natural places that make America the country it is.

“Rep. Miller is responsible for some of the most historic and critically important legislation on wildlife, the environment, climate change and our national parks. He has been an unrelenting protector of wildlife, especially endangered species, in California, Alaska and across the nation. His exceptional leadership on the Hill will be sorely missed.”
