Areas of Expertise: wildlife biology; habitat restoration, community impacts, indicator species, avian conservation, freshwater mussels, Texas buffalo, human-wildlife coexistence; and the Texas Hill Country landscape.

Azalia is passionate about protecting endangered species and strengthening community connections in conservation. As the Texas Representative, she focuses on the Texas Hill Country landscape, building community partnerships, advancing terrestrial and aquatic habitat conservation, and supporting the protection of Central Texas’ threatened and endangered species, including the golden-cheeked warbler and the Texas blind salamander.

Prior to joining Defenders, Azalia worked in biological research at The University of Queensland in Australia and the University of Colorado Boulder. She holds an M.S. in Wildlife Biology from The University of Queensland (2019).

Lights Out Texas is a campaign of education, awareness and action that focuses on turning out lights at night during the spring and fall migrations to help protect the billions of migratory birds that fly over Texas annually.
