I have had the pleasure of seeing elephant seals off the coast of California just north of the Hearst Castle. I have spent hours watching these unusual creatures bask in the sun, flipping sand on their backs to stay cool and keep the bugs away (I presume) and getting testy with each other as they bicker over the best real estate on the beach.
