Red Hot and Green Graphic

Red Hot and Green Fridays have kicked off! And in our very first submission, Barbara’s hanging dry for habitat preservation! Clothes dryers are big users of electricity, so line-drying your clothes is a great way to save energy and reduce carbon emissions. The same goes with washing machines – when you wash clothes in cold water instead of warm, you can save 500 pounds of CO2. (Now if only we had a way to save the energy it takes to fold them!)

And to prove that the fight against climate change can start at any age, Maral is unplugging it for polar bears and baby penguins.

They both know that one of the easiest ways to cut down on carbon emissions is in your home. Many appliances continue to use electricity when they’re not in use. By unplugging your appliances, you can have a big impact on your energy use and your electricity bill.

At either ends of the earth, species like polar bears and penguins are watching their chilly habitats melt away. Arctic sea ice – depended on by polar bears for hunting and raising young – is thinning and shrinking at an alarming rate. And from rockhopper to emperor, penguins are in real trouble. Starvation, habitat loss and the fact that the penguins’ world is literally breaking up under their feet are all contributing factors to dramatic population loss. But just like Barbara and Maral, YOU can help them! Cutting your greenhouse gas emissions will help to freeze the polar meltdown in its tracks – and there are lots of ways you can do it! So….
