Defenders expands Science Advisors while reiterating need for strong scientific integrity in wildlife policy
Washington, DC

Defenders of Wildlife today announced its expanded group of Science Advisors as part of its continuing commitment to ensure science plays the leading role in wildlife conservation policy. The 10 esteemed scientists include members of the National Academy of Sciences and federal advisory committees, founders and editors of scientific journals, alumni of the Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders program, and other prestigious leaders. All of Defenders’ Science Advisors have distinguished scientific careers and significantly contributed to biodiversity conservation research, policy and practice.

At a time when the Trump administration and others are focused on undermining scientific integrity throughout the government, Defenders has engaged its Science Advisors to expand the organization’s scientific capacity and voice. As scholars actively engaged in conservation science, Defenders’ Science Advisors also play an important role in encouraging other scientists to engage in evidence-based conservation advocacy. Further, the Science Advisors reflect a broader representation of the scientists working in the wildlife and conservation sciences.

Jamie Rappaport Clark, president and CEO of Defenders of Wildlife, issued the following statement:

“While politicians are attempting to weaken the role of science in protecting species and habitats, Defenders of Wildlife is expanding the essential role of science across the organization and working to ensure science is central to wildlife conservation policy. We are proud to be partnering with Science Advisors who bring profound expertise on a range of wildlife species, landscapes, and issues, and who represent broad perspectives and approaches to conservation science.”

Defenders of Wildlife is celebrating 75 years of protecting all native animals and plants in their natural communities. With a nationwide network of nearly 2.2 million members and activists, Defenders of Wildlife is a leading advocate for innovative solutions to safeguard our wildlife heritage for generations to come.
