Defenders’ Official Position on the Authorization for Removal of Profanity Peak Pack
Washington, D.C. -- Based on the policies agreed upon by the Washington Wolf Advisory Group, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has authorized the lethal removal of the Profanity Peak wolf pack due to repeated depredations in the area since July 8.
Jamie Rappaport Clark, president and CEO for Defenders of Wildlife, issued the following statement:
“The loss of the Profanity Peak wolf pack is devastating and challenges our long-term vision for wolf recovery. Wolves need our support and tolerance to ensure their safe passage on suitable lands where they can rightfully roam freely in the wild.
"This was the first year of management under the current protocols in Washington state. In a few weeks’ time, the Washington Wolf Advisory Group will begin evaluating the protocols and develop potential changes prior to the next grazing season.
"Defenders of Wildlife will work closely with the community and the advisory group to ensure that any refinement of the protocols do not undermine continued wolf recovery. We are also pressing the U.S. Forest Service to become a more active participant in promoting non-lethal conflict prevention measures on the public lands they manage.
"Defenders has achieved great success with wolf coexistence tools and strategies across the country, including Washington state. We believe we can build on those successes going forward for a better future for wolves.”
