Defenders of Wildlife is proud to announce Michael Dax as the New Mexico representative in the Southwest program office. He will be focusing on imperiled fish and their habitat, wildlife habitat connectivity and renewable energy siting and transmission, among other things.
Most recently, Michael served as Defenders’ New Mexico outreach representative for Government Relations.
Bryan Bird, Southwest program director for Defenders of Wildlife, issued this statement:
“We are thrilled to have Michael Dax as our newest representative in our Southwest office. With his four years of experience working on conservation issues in New Mexico, he will be vital to our team as we continue to fight to protect endangered species and lands in the region.”

New Mexico is on the forefront of major environmental policy changes, including increasing its renewable energy goals and improving wildlife corridor conservation policies, and I look forward to implementing programs and initiatives to further Defenders of Wildlife’s work on these issues.”
Background:
Before joining Defenders, Michael Dax worked for the Montana Wilderness Association as their communications and campaign fellow and as a field director for North Dakotans for Clean Water, Wildlife and Parks gathering signatures for a ballot measure in North Dakota to dedicate existing oil tax revenue to conservation. He also worked as a tour guide driving guests throughout Grand Canyon and in Yellowstone National Parks. Michael earned a master’s degree in environmental history from the University of Montana where he began work on his book, Grizzly West, which focuses on the attempt to reintroduce grizzly bears to the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness in Montana and Idaho. He received his B.A. from Brandeis University.
