
Richard is a human resources practitioner with over 20 years of experience across mainly non-profit and healthcare industries. He is a part of the HR team and is responsible for managing employee and labor relations at Defenders. Known for his strong generalist background, Richard has held progressive roles including Human Resources Consultant, HR Manager, and HR Director in both union and non-union environments.
Richard’s passion for connecting with people and understanding human conditions in the workplace was sparked during his undergraduate studies at Old Dominion University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Communications and competed in forensics through Pi Kappa Delta. These formative experiences shaped his human-centered approach to HR. Furthering his education, Mr. Winston pursued a Master of Arts in Organizational Communications from Bowie State University and later earned a Master of Science in Human Resources Management from Western Governors University, alongside additional training at Villanova University and The Catholic University of America. He is certified, having attained designation as a Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR), Professional in Human Resources (PHR), Society for Human Resources – Certified Professional (SHRM-CP), and a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP). Richard has also received advanced training in employment law, mediation, and alternative dispute resolution.
With a commitment to equity, advocacy, and professional excellence, Richard strives to elevate human resources practices and make a meaningful impact in every organization he serves. A native of the greater Richmond, VA area, Richard enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and quiet moments at the beach. His favorite destination to date has been New Zealand, touring its awesome rainforest and natural black sand beaches!
